OFFICIAL RESOURCES · RESEARCH CHECKED OCTOBER 5, 2026
Paperwork in District of Columbia.
Find the official resources behind the preparation notes. Use the exact document-specific requirements and current agency forms; a general template does not replace required filing, signing, notice, or transfer procedures.
Vehicle transfers & bills of sale
DC requires the original ownership document, a bill of sale, and the applicable title and registration evidence.
Coverage: Motor vehicles in the documented guidance. Boat, trailer, firearm, and other asset rules require their own review.
Align owner and lien records
Use the properly executed title or manufacturer’s origin document, bill of sale, applicable lien/lease contract, and odometer certification. All owners must be listed consistently. Altered titles are unacceptable.
Document scope: Vehicle Bill of Sale, Motorcycle Bill of Sale, RV & Camper Bill of Sale
DC DMV — Vehicle titlesOnline application still needs the original title
The private-sale online process includes uploads followed by mailing the original title using a trackable service. A PDF bill of sale cannot stand in for that original title.
Document scope: Vehicle Bill of Sale, Motorcycle Bill of Sale, RV & Camper Bill of Sale
DC DMV — Online private sale registrationResidential rental documents
Identify rent-control status and consult the Office of the Tenant Advocate before using a rent increase or termination notice.
Coverage: Residential rental research. Commercial, farm, hunting, equipment, and vehicle leases are separate subjects.
Check rent increases, housing code, and tenant rights
OTA publishes a Tenant Bill of Rights, tutorial videos, and a resource guide. Record the unit’s rent-control registration or exemption, the basis for any increase, and applicable housing-code issues. Use OTA’s current guidance for tenant purchase rights and other DC-specific protections; a general month-to-month clause does not resolve these questions.
