OFFICIAL RESOURCES · RESEARCH CHECKED OCTOBER 5, 2026

Paperwork in Michigan.

Find the official resources behind the preparation notes. Use the exact document-specific requirements and current agency forms; a general template does not replace required filing, signing, notice, or transfer procedures.

Vehicle transfers & bills of sale

Use the original title, completed assignment, and any lien termination. Keep proof of the sale after handover.

Coverage: Motor vehicles in the documented guidance. Boat, trailer, firearm, and other asset rules require their own review.

Match seller, VIN, and signatures

The seller supplies the original title with accurate mileage, buyer information, and seller signature. All owners listed must sign. Confirm the vehicle VIN matches the title and do not make alterations that invalidate it.

Document scope: Vehicle Bill of Sale, Motorcycle Bill of Sale, RV & Camper Bill of Sale

Resolve the recorded lien

Obtain a lien termination statement or a title signed by the lienholder when a lien exists. Recording a payoff promise in the agreement does not itself release that lien.

Document scope: Vehicle Bill of Sale, Motorcycle Bill of Sale, RV & Camper Bill of Sale

Remove the plate and retain copies

Michigan directs the seller to remove the plate before delivery and keep a copy of the title and sale record for at least 18 months. Going with the buyer to the Secretary of State office helps confirm completion.

Buyer: complete the title transfer promptly

Michigan lists a late fee if the title is not transferred within 15 days of sale. Follow the official transfer route and confirm insurance and applicable tax evidence rather than relying solely on the bill of sale.

Residential rental documents

Michigan’s deposit rules require an inventory and a careful forwarding-address and dispute record.

Coverage: Residential rental research. Commercial, farm, hunting, equipment, and vehicle leases are separate subjects.

Supply move-in inventory copies

MCL 554.608 requires two blank commencement-inventory copies and specifies how the condition checklist is used. Include this in the attachment list rather than relying solely on a general “condition” field. Preserve the completed comparison at move-out.

Forwarding address affects deposit correspondence

MCL 554.611 requires the tenant to notify the landlord in writing of the forwarding address within four days after termination of occupancy. The effect of noncompliance is specific; do not say the tenant automatically forfeits the entire deposit. Preserve landlord notices, itemization, tenant response, and mailing records.
