OFFICIAL RESOURCES · RESEARCH CHECKED OCTOBER 5, 2026

Paperwork in Montana.

Find the official resources behind the preparation notes. Use the exact document-specific requirements and current agency forms; a general template does not replace required filing, signing, notice, or transfer procedures.

Vehicle transfers & bills of sale

Montana removed the title notarization requirement in October 2025. Older agency PDFs can still display the previous rule.

Coverage: Motor vehicles in the documented guidance. Boat, trailer, firearm, and other asset rules require their own review.

Use the current title-signature rule

MVD’s current FAQ says HB165 removed notarization for individual and business title transfers from October 2, 2025. Older Montana titles with a notary section are accepted without that section completed. Still obtain the required owners’ signatures.

Retain evidence and remove plates

Keep proof of sale and remove your plates before delivery. Arrange the buyer’s lawful temporary-registration process and confirm liens are resolved; a signed private agreement does not register the buyer.

Residential rental documents

Use Montana DOJ’s landlord–tenant resources and distinguish the lease from statutory rights.

Coverage: Residential rental research. Commercial, farm, hunting, equipment, and vehicle leases are separate subjects.

Verify the Act and preserve written communications

Montana DOJ directs landlords and tenants to the Residential Landlord and Tenant Act and their rental agreement. Check the current deposit, access, maintenance, and notice provisions. Keep a condition record and repair correspondence; additional agreed terms must be reviewed against the Act, not treated as a waiver of it.
