Paperwork in North Carolina.
Find the official resources behind the preparation notes. Use the exact document-specific requirements and current agency forms; a general template does not replace required filing, signing, notice, or transfer procedures.
Vehicle transfers & bills of sale
Transfer ownership through the title. A North Carolina title must be notarized; an out-of-state title follows its issuing state’s execution requirements.
Coverage: Motor vehicles in the documented guidance. Boat, trailer, firearm, and other asset rules require their own review.
Complete and notarize the appropriate title
Both parties complete the original title’s transfer information. For a North Carolina title, obtain notarization. Include buyer name and address, sale or delivery date, seller printed name and signature, and applicable odometer and damage disclosures.
Document scope: Vehicle Bill of Sale, Motorcycle Bill of Sale, RV & Camper Bill of Sale
North Carolina DMV — Vehicle titles and transfersConfirm the additional forms
Review MVR-1 and the required mileage and damage-disclosure forms with a license plate agency. A private bill of sale cannot replace the assigned title, application, or mandatory disclosure records.
Document scope: Vehicle Bill of Sale, Motorcycle Bill of Sale, RV & Camper Bill of Sale
NCDMV — Vehicle documents and formsFamily tax exemption is specific
North Carolina describes a highway-use-tax exemption for certain transfers between spouses, parents and children, or stepparents and stepchildren, using MVR-613 and subject to its residency/title conditions. Do not assume every family sale is exempt.
Document scope: Vehicle Bill of Sale, Motorcycle Bill of Sale, RV & Camper Bill of Sale
North Carolina DMV — Vehicle titles and transfersA seller record change has its own form
If a sold vehicle remains on your registration file, NCDMV provides MVR-46F for removal from those files and requires notarization of that affidavit. Signing a bill of sale does not submit it.

Residential leases and vacation rentals have different statutory frameworks.
Coverage: Residential rental research. Commercial, farm, hunting, equipment, and vehicle leases are separate subjects.
Record repairs and review deposit rules
NCDOJ’s rental guidance explains rights and responsibilities and points to its landlord–tenant booklet. Preserve written repair requests, payment records, and a condition inventory. Check the applicable deposit, notice, and local code requirements rather than making every charge in the lease enforceable by agreement alone.
North Carolina DOJ — Renting a homeUse a separate vacation-rental agreement when appropriate
NCDOJ explains that covered vacation rentals require a written agreement describing rights, obligations, payments, and deposit handling. Confirm coverage under the vacation-rental rules before using a normal residential lease or short-stay template; document cancellation and advance-payment arrangements accordingly.
